Firefly Bay and Basin Rebrand & Website Redesign: A Case Study

When Firefly, a community-driven initiative empowering youth on the South Coast of NSW, approached Yes! Creative for a rebrand and website redesign, it required more than just fresh visuals. The challenge was to create a digital identity that resonated with young people while also appealing to government bodies and funding agencies. Through a strategic blend of branding, graphic design, and web design, Together Yes! and the team at Firefly developed a solution that balanced community engagement with professional appeal.

Audience-Centric Design: User Research & Personas

We began by conducting in-depth user research, focusing on understanding Firefly’s diverse audience, including young people, parents, community groups, and government bodies. This research led to the development of detailed user personas, ensuring that the final design was both user-centric and aligned with Firefly’s mission of youth empowerment.

Creative Direction: Crafting a Versatile Brand

The rebrand aimed to simplify Firefly’s logo while maintaining its essence. We developed a handcrafted word marque that utilised the typography to symbolise fireflies, reflecting the organisation’s role in lighting up the lives of young people. The design strategy and creative direction focused on creating a digital identity that was versatile to work across various mediums and applications.

Visual Identity: A Cohesive Aesthetic

We developed a cohesive design system incorporating a photographic duotone style and a custom illustration palette. These elements added vibrancy and depth to the brand, enhancing the user experience on the site while providing a guide for the easy maintenance of the site while staying on brand. The visual identity balanced creativity with professionalism, appealing to both the youthful audience and key stakeholders.

Website Design: User-Friendly & Easy to Maintain

The final design prioritised user experience design and ease of maintenance.

Key Features of the Website:

  • Intuitive Navigation: The website’s architecture was designed for seamless navigation, catering to different audience segments.
  • Content Management System (CMS): A user-friendly CMS was implemented, allowing the Firefly team to update content effortlessly, ensuring the website remains current.
  • Responsive design: The design was optimised for all devices, providing a consistent and engaging experience across desktops, tablets, and smartphones.

Conclusion

Firefly Are an awesome bunch of people of the South Coast doing awesome things for awesome young people. The project was an exceptional opportunity to develop the branding, graphic design, and web design for a non-profit on the South Coast of NSW. We delivered a digital identity that empowers Firefly’s community engagement efforts. The result is a dynamic, versatile brand that supports youth empowerment while appealing to government and funding agencies.
